One lucky family just got the Christmas gift of a lifetime: the down payment for their new Habitat for Humanity house and all of the furniture they’ll need to help make it a home. The contest, called “La Ley Brings a Family Home for the Holidays” gave four Habitat Collier pre-approved families the opportunity to compete via Facebook likes to win the grand prize: $1,000 to cover the cost of the down payment on the home and nearly $8,000 worth of furniture from Aaron’s Furniture in Lehigh Acres. La Ley disc jockeys each adopted a family and filmed a video of the family members telling the public why they have partnered with Habitat to purchase a home. The videos were posted on the La Ley 92.1 FM Facebook page for voting, and the one that garnered the most Facebook likes over the two-week voting period was chosen as the contest winner. On Saturday, December 3, Habitat for Humanity of Collier County, in partnership with La Ley FM 92.1 Radio, held an event in the Immokalee Habitat for Humanity community, Faith Landing, to announce the winners, the Domingo family. Francisco and Maria’s dream was to have a home of their own to grow old in and to give their children a safe and secure place to grow up, but finding a place to live that was both adequate and affordable proved to be difficult. Qualifying for a Habitat home was their dream come true, and winning their down payment and a truckload of furniture was an added bonus that they never could have imagined. As part of the event, friends, family and volunteers gave their time to help each of the four families fulfill their “sweat equity” hours, helping to put the finishing touches on their homes. The three other families who entered the contest also won prizes for their participation. All of the families will begin closing on their mortgages in the coming weeks, just in time to be home for the holidays. Habitat Collier builds more than 100 homes per year and is the highest-producing and one of the oldest affiliates in the nation.
