Pathways Early Education Center of Immokalee (Pathways) welcomed the Ohio State Buckeye Volunteers to the center for a Buck-I-Serv alternative spring break program. Susan Ignelzi, an active member of the Ohio State Alumni Club of Naples, spearheaded efforts to connect the students with Pathways. Eight female college students chose to immerse themselves in Immokalee, staying at a local church for their volunteer mission through the Buck-I-Serv alternative spring break program. The Ohio State University Buck-I-Serv program stands for Students Engaged in Responsible Volunteering. In their project, the college students were educated about Pathway’s 54 years of history, traditions and diversity in the Immokalee community. They learned about the unique needs for families in the migrant farm worker community and how they are still recovering from Hurricane Irma. Additionally, through this experience, the students saw the early education goals with hands-on interaction with Pathways’ students during story time, art activities, music and dancing. Wrapping up the week, they helped organize a St. Patrick’s Day Buckeye Leprechaun dance parade spreading good luck to all. As one of the largest and most active groups comprised of Ohio State University alumni in the United States, the Ohio State Alumni Club of Naples has long been recognized as one of the premier Alumni Clubs in the nation. Membership is open not only to alumni, but also to friends and fans of Ohio State University. The organization provides opportunities to the members and their families for community engagement activities like the one at Pathways. As a nationally accredited early education center, Pathways’ goal is to provide the children of Immokalee with exceptional childcare and education opportunities. The center’s students engage in learning opportunities with volunteers, their families and staff that will help give them the tools they need to succeed in kindergarten and in life.
