Who doesn’t love getting their hands on a brand new book?!? There is so much excitement and anticipation of what you will find on each page. Recently a group of students from Immokalee Middle School (IMS) got a chance to do just that – pick out a new book of their very own. The field trip is called “Adventures in Literature” and it is part of the Migrant Program at IMS. The idea came about five years ago as a way to increase literacy skills for certain groups of students. With the help of Title I Migrant funding and the Barnes and Noble store in Naples, the students each chose a book to take home with them. Joseph Novotny, a teacher at IMS, says the students enjoyed every minute of the trip. “Watching the students with armfuls of books was a great thing. Even better was the bus ride back. It was so quiet. When we looked back to see why, the students had their books out and were reading on the way home!” explains Novotny. Thank you to everyone involved in this incredible effort!
