Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Kik, Whisper, Tumblr, Snapchat, and Oovoo – these names may read like a foreign language to some parents, but not to your kids. “You really need to know what these apps do and the way these apps work,” explains Sgt. Wade Williams of the Collier County Sheriff’s Office Special Crimes Bureau. If you don’t know how these apps work, you are in luck. Collier County Public Schools (CCPS) is hosting a very important event to get you up to speed. Our Virtual Town Hall Meeting on Social Media and Education will take place on Tuesday, October 27th, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the MLK School Administrative Center (5775 Osceola Trail, Naples). There will also be telecast locations at Immokalee Technical College (508 North 9th Street, Immokalee) and Everglades City School (415 School Drive, Everglades City). Sgt. Wade Williams will be one of six experts on hand at the event to answer your questions about everything from cyberbullying to specific online privacy settings you need to be aware of when it comes to your child’s use of social media. “The worst thing that a parent can do is to take a smartphone or a tablet, not put any restrictions on it, and just hand it to their child,” says Sgt. Williams. Our panel of experts will also address the role of social media in our schools and the varying digital classroom resources available to your child. Questions may be submitted online prior to the event by visiting www.collierschools.com. You may also ask your questions the night of the discussion or share your questions on social media using #CCPSsocial. In addition to our panelists, we will have a digital answer desk of experts ready to answer your questions on this important topic online throughout this one-hour event. We hope to see you on October 27th!
