Meet Immokalee’s new library branch manager Miya Thomas. Ms. Thomas is originally from Ohio and moved to the Collier County area about four years ago after receiving her bachelor’s degree at Ohio University. Soon after her transition from Ohio to Naples, she began working at an elementary library which sparked her interest in becoming a librarian. While working at the library, Thomas decided to go back to school as an online student to pursue her master’s degree at Florida State University. During her interview, Thomas went into detail about why she enjoys working in Immokalee and what attracted her to the area. “I visited this library a few months ago and I automatically knew I wanted to work here. I just love the community, at any other place I’ve ever worked at there’s never been a community like this, already in the few weeks I’ve been here working as a branch manager I got to see how many people we partner with from the museums, going to the CRA meetings and seeing all the other parts of the community and what they do and how they all work together has been great. Everyone has been so welcoming and I feel like with this position I’m going to be able to really help the community and become a part of it. I know it’s going to take people time to get use to a new branch manager but I’m really excited to become that new change.” Thomas adores the pride that fills the town of Immokalee and appreciates the authenticity and traditions that our small town has to offer. While getting accustomed to this new position Thomas is eager to see new faces and welcome back the recurring faces that she has already gotten familiar with. The Immokalee library branch will be hosting a meet and greet to officially welcome and introduce the new branch manager on August 13 from 4:00-6:00 p.m. Drinks and light refreshments will be served.
