Police say driver who plowed into Liverpool soccer fans acted alone, not believed to be terrorism
LONDON (AP) — British police say an incident in which a minivan hit crowds celebrating Liverpool’s soccer victory is not being treated as terrorism. Merseyside Police said Monday a 53-year-old man, believed to be the driver, has been arrested and they are not looking for anyone else. Authorities say 27 people were taken to the hospital, with two suffering serious injuries, and another 20 people were treated at the scene for minor injuries. At least four children were injured. The crash happened at the end of the team's bus parade through the city after winning the Premier League this season.
Trump honors fallen soldiers on Memorial Day, while attacking Biden and judges
ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) — President Donald Trump has paid tribute to fallen service members during a Memorial Day ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery. He honored what he called the “great, great warriors” Monday, yet veered into politics, boasting that he's fixing the country after "a long and hard four years.” Although the holiday is typically a solemn one, Trump began it with an all-caps Memorial Day message that attacked his predecessor and called federal judges who have blocked his deportation initiatives “monsters who want our country to go to hell.” More than 400,000 are laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery, and there he commemorated the sacrifice of the fallen.
Russia and Ukraine complete prisoner swap hours after Moscow launches major aerial assault
KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russia and Ukraine have swapped hundreds more prisoners of war, the third and last part of a major swap and a rare moment of cooperation in otherwise failed efforts to reach a ceasefire. Each side brought home 303 more soldiers in Sunday's exchange after each released a total of 307 combatants and civilians on Saturday, and 390 on Friday. The swap was the biggest since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 and came just hours after Ukraine's capital of Kyiv and other regions came under a massive Russian drone-and-missile attack that killed at least 12 people and injured dozens. Ukrainian officials sad the attack was the largest aerial assault of the war.
A new aid system in Gaza has started operations, a US-backed group says
DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — A new aid system in Gaza has opened its first distribution hubs in the territory. That's according to a U.S.-backed group that is taking over handling of supplies. The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation is backed by Israel and the United States but has been rejected by the United Nations and other aid groups. They assert that Israel is trying to use food as a weapon. They also say a new distribution system won’t be effective. Gaza faces a growing humanitarian crisis after Israel’s nearly three-month blockade of supplies to pressure Hamas. Experts have warned of famine in the territory of over 2 million people.
More than 200 Ukrainian POWs have died in Russian prisons. This is one soldier's story
KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — More than 200 Ukrainian POWs have died in Russian prisons since Moscow's full-scale invasion three years ago. Officials from human rights groups, the U.N. and the Ukrainian government say torture, starvation and inadequate health care were likely contributing factors in many of these deaths. These officials say the prison deaths add to evidence that Russia is systematically brutalizing POWs. And they believe that forensic discrepancies between Russian and Ukrainian autopsies, and the repatriation of bodies that are badly mutilated and decomposed, point to an effort by Russia to cover up systematic mistreatment. Russian authorities did not respond to requests for comment. But they have previously accused Ukraine of mistreating Russian POWs — allegations the U.N. has partially backed up.
How has Minneapolis changed since the murder of George Floyd 5 years ago?
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minneapolis has changed, slowly, since a city police officer murdered George Floyd on Memorial Day in 2020. The city is still struggling to decide what should become of the intersection where Floyd met his demise, which has become a place of pilgrimage known as George Floyd Square. City leaders have not agreed on whether to close the intersection to all traffic as a permanent memorial. Minneapolis has also begun a remake of its police department under court supervision — an effort that the mayor and police chief say will continue with or without the backing of the Trump administration.
Former US Rep. Charles Rangel, who spent nearly 50 years representing New York, has died
NEW YORK (AP) — Former U.S. Rep. Charles Rangel of New York has died at age 94. The outspoken, gravel-voiced Harlem Democrat spent nearly five decades on Capitol Hill and was a founding member of the Congressional Black Caucus. His family confirmed his death in a statement provided by City College of New York spokesperson Michelle Stent. She said he died Monday at a New York hospital. A veteran of the Korean War, he defeated legendary Harlem politician Adam Clayton Powell in 1970 to start his congressional career. During the next 40-plus years, he became a legend himself. In 2010, the House censured him following an ethics scandal. But he stayed in Congress until 2017.
King Charles to outline Mark Carney's priorities in Canada's Parliament amid Trump annexation threat
OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) — King Charles III will outline new Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government priorities in a speech in Parliament in what’s viewed as a show of support in the face of annexation threats by U.S. President Donald Trump. Trump’s repeated suggestion that the U.S. annex Canada prompted Prime Minister Carney to invite Charles to give the speech Tuesday from the throne. The king is the head of state in Canada, which is a member of the British Commonwealth of former colonies. Carney says the visit speaks to the “vitality of our constitutional monarchy and our distinct identity.”
The 2028 podcast primary is underway as Democrats try to reshape their image
Four months into the Trump administration, some top Democrats are rethinking their approach to podcasts. Some high-profile politicians with 2028 aspirations are starting their own shows or venturing more into popular ones with already large audiences. Taking a reflective look back at their opponent’s strategy, Democratic strategists point out that Trump used podcasts to take his message to new audiences, and hope that their party’s next round of candidates can successfully do the same.
What's open and closed on Memorial Day?
In what had long been celebrated every May 30 to honor America’s fallen soldiers, Memorial Day officially became a federal holiday in 1971, observed on the last Monday in May. Businesses increasingly have chosen to stay open on the holiday, leading to what is now one of the biggest retail sales and travel weekends of the year. Government offices, post offices and schools are closed, as is the stock market, banks and a handful of businesses. The vast majority of retailers will be open, with many trying to lure customers with big promotional sales.
