Search for Texas flood victims paused as heavy rains bring new threat of high waters

KERRVILLE, Texas (AP) — Emergency crews have suspended their search for victims of catastrophic flooding in central Texas amid new warnings that additional rain will again cause waterways to surge. Ingram Fire Department officials ordered search crews to immediately evacuate the Guadalupe River corridor in Kerr County until further notice, warning the potential for a flash flood is high. Search-and-rescue teams have been searching for missing victims of the July 4 weekend flooding that killed at least 129 people and left more than 170 missing. As heavy rain fell Sunday, National Weather Service forecasters warned that the Guadalupe River could rise to nearly 15 feet by the afternoon, about five feet above flood stage.

FEMA removed dozens of Camp Mystic buildings from 100-year flood map before expansion, records show

Federal regulators repeatedly granted appeals to remove Camp Mystic’s buildings from their 100-year flood map, as the camp operated and expanded in a dangerous flood plain in the years before rushing waters swept away children and counselors. The Federal Emergency Management Agency included the prestigious camp for girls in a “Special Flood Hazard Area” in its National Flood Insurance map for Kerr County in 2011, which means it was required to have flood insurance and faced tighter regulation on any future construction projects. But in map amendments in 2013, 2019 and 2020, FEMA granted appeals to remove 30 Camp Mystic structures from the map. The amendments shielded buildings at the original site, as well as at a second camp site.

Trump announces 30% tariffs against EU, Mexico to begin Aug. 1, rattling major US trading partners

BRIDGEWATER, N.J. (AP) — President Donald Trump has announced he’s levying tariffs of 30% against the European Union and Mexico starting Aug. 1. Trump detailed the planned tariffs Saturday in letters posted to his social media account. It's a move that could cause massive upheaval between the U.S. and two of its biggest trade partners. European Union Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the EU may adopt "proportionate countermeasures" if Trump moves ahead with the tariffs. Mexico's government in a statement described the proposed move by Trump as “unfair treatment." The letters are part of an announcement blitz by Trump of new tariffs with allies and foes alike, a bedrock of his 2024 campaign that he said would set the foundation for reviving a U.S. economy.

Trump says he's considering 'taking away' Rosie O'Donnell's US citizenship

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump says he is considering revoking actress and comedian Rosie O’Donnell’s U.S. citizenship. On Saturday, Trump claimed on social media that O’Donnell is not in the “best interests” of the country and suggested she should stay in Ireland, where she moved earlier this year. Legal experts, however, note the Constitution prevents the government from stripping citizenship from native-born Americans. O’Donnell, born in the U.S., has a constitutional right to her citizenship. The two have feuded publicly for years.

Fuel to Air India plane was cut off moments before crash, investigation report says

NEW DELHI (AP) — Preliminary findings into last month’s Air India plane crash suggest the aircraft’s fuel control switches were turned off, causing a loss of engine thrust shortly after takeoff. The report, issued by India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau on Saturday, also indicated that both pilots were confused over the change to the switch setting. The report did not say how the switches could have flipped to the cutoff position. The June 12 crash occurred in India’s western city of Ahmedabad when the plane struck a residential area shortly after takeoff, killing at least 260 people, including 19 on the ground. Only one passenger survived the crash.

What the ‘black box’ can tell us about plane crashes

NEW DELHI (AP) — A preliminary finding into last month’s Air India plane crash has suggested the aircraft’s fuel control switches were turned off, starving the engines of fuel and causing a loss of engine thrust shortly after takeoff. The Air India flight — a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner — crashed on June 12 and killed at least 260 people, including 19 on the ground, in the northwestern city of Ahmedabad. Only one passenger survived the crash, which is one of India’s worst aviation disasters. The report based its finding on the data recovered from the plane’s black boxes — combined cockpit voice recorders and flight data recorders. Here is an explanation of what black boxes are and what they can do:

Lawmakers visit 'Alligator Alcatraz' after being blocked

OCHOPEE, Fla. (AP) — Democratic lawmakers are condemning Florida’s new Everglades immigration detention center after making a state-arranged visit. They are describing crowded, unsanitary and bug-infested conditions that officials have dubbed “Alligator Alcatraz.” But Republican legislators said they saw a clean and well-run facility while on the same tour Saturday. The visit came after some Democrats were blocked earlier from viewing the 3,000-bed detention center. The state rapidly built it on an isolated airstrip surrounded by swampland.

DOGE sprouts in red states, as governors embrace the cost-cutter brand and make it their own

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — President Donald Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency has spawned state-level DOGE initiatives as Republican governors and lawmakers aim to show that they're in step. Critics say some of these initiatives are nothing new or duplicative, while some governors are using their DOGE vehicles to target welfare programs or diversity, equity and inclusion programs. The state initiatives have a markedly different character than Trump’s slash-and-burn approach. Steve Slivinski of the libertarian Cato Institute says much of what he's seen is the same mundane stuff states routinely do to save money. Analysts at the pro-labor Economic Policy Institute say some governors and lawmakers are using DOGE agendas to consolidate power.

Russia warns US, South Korea and Japan against forming security alliance targeting North Korea

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Russia’s foreign minister has warned the U.S., South Korea and Japan against forming a security partnership targeting North Korea. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey made the comments Saturday during a trip to North Korea. The U.S., South Korea and Japan have been expanding or restoring their regular combined military exercises in response to North Korea’s advancing nuclear program. At the same time, North Korea and Russia have been upgrading their military and other cooperation, with the North supplying troops and weapons to support Russia's war against Ukraine.

LONDON (AP) — Iga Swiatek has won her first Wimbledon championship with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Amanda Anisimova in the final. Saturday's victory at the All England Club took just 57 minutes and gave Swiatek her sixth Grand Slam title overall. She is now 6-0 in major title matches. The 24-year-old from Poland already owned four trophies from the French Open's red clay and one from the U.S. Open's hard courts.
