Del Monte Foods is filing for bankruptcy protection. The 139-year-old California company is best known for its canned fruits and vegetables, which have seen sales slide as U.S. consumers seek out healthier and cheaper options. Del Monte said late Thursday that the bankruptcy filing is part of a planned sale of the company’s assets. It has secured $912.5 million in debtor-in-possession financing that will allow it to operate normally during the sale process. Del Monte is owned by Singapore-based Del Monte Pacific. It also owns the Contadina, College Inn and Joyba bubble tea brands.

Ford recalls more than 200,000 vehicles over malfunctioning rearview camera

Ford Motor Co. is recalling more than 200,000 vehicles because a software defect can cause the rearview camera to fail, increasing the risk of a crash and injury. Ford told U.S. highway safety regulators that the camera can either display a blank image or that the image may remain on the display after the driver finishes backing up, causing a distraction. Dealerships will eventually update the camera software free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed by July 28.

Popular unicycle performer Red Panda injured at halftime of WNBA game

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The popular halftime show performer who goes by Red Panda fell off her unicycle and crashed to the court during intermission of the WNBA Commissioner’s Cup final between the Indiana Fever and the Minnesota Lynx on Tuesday night, unable to finish her show. There was no immediate word on the extent of her injuries. She was helped off the floor by wheelchair. Red Panda, whose name is Rong Niu, is Chinese American and her act is composed of her riding on her custom-built unicycle, which stretches about 8 feet above the court, and balancing custom-made bowls on her lower leg before flipping them atop her head.

Lululemon files lawsuit against Costco, claims company is selling 'dupes' of some of its products

Lululemon has filed a lawsuit against Costco that accuses the wholesale club operator of selling lower-priced duplicates of some of its popular athleisure clothing. Lululemon Athletica claims in its lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California that Costco has “unlawfully traded” on its reputation, goodwill and sweat equity by selling unauthorized and unlicensed apparel that uses knockoff, infringing versions of its patents.

Judge tells 92-year-old he will die in prison after conviction in UK’s oldest solved cold case

LONDON (AP) — A 92-year-old former railway worker has been sentenced to life in a British prison for raping and murdering a woman in 1967. The case is believed to be the U.K.’s oldest solved cold case. Ryland Headley was sentenced Tuesday in Bristol Crown Court for strangling Louisa Dunne. Headley got away with the crime for nearly 60 years until DNA linked him to the rape last year. Headley had previously been convicted of raping older women in the 1970s. Justice Derek Sweeting in Bristol Crown Court called the crime a "pitiless and cruel act by a depraved man.” Sweeting told Headley he would die in prison.

Anne Wojcicki's nonprofit gets court approval to buy 23andMe for $305 million

NEW YORK (AP) — Anne Wojcicki's nonprofit, TTAM Research Institute, has received court approval to acquire 23andMe, the genetic testing company she co-founded. The $305 million deal follows 23andMe's Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in March and a bidding war with Regeneron Pharmaceuticals. TTAM will take over 23andMe's DNA testing services, research operations, and telehealth subsidiary. Privacy concerns remain a key issue, with some states opposing the sale due to genetic data protection laws. TTAM has pledged to honor 23andMe's privacy policies, allowing users to delete their data or opt out of research. The acquisition is expected to close soon.

Rap duo Bob Vylan's anti-Israel chants prompt UK police to review Glastonbury acts

LONDON (AP) — British police are reviewing videos from the Glastonbury Festival after rapper Bobby Vylan of Bob Vylan led chants of “death to the IDF” or Israel Defense Forces and “free Palestine” on Saturday. Avon and Somerset Police are assessing whether any criminal offenses occurred. The Israeli Embassy and U.K. Health Secretary Wes Streeting on Sunday condemned the remarks. The culture secretary has discussed the incident with the BBC which aired the performance with a warning about discriminatory language. Irish-language rap group Kneecap also performed despite criticism by British politicians and a terror charge for one of the trio over his alleged support for Hezbollah.

(AP) — The Miami Dolphins are sending All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey, Pro Bowl tight end Jonnu Smith and a 2027 seventh-round draft pick to the Pittsburgh Steelers in exchange for All-Pro safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and a 2027 fifth-round pick. Ramsey announced the trade Monday in a social media post. A person familiar with the trade confirmed that the Dolphins will get Fitzpatrick, who returns to the team that drafted him 11th overall in 2018. The terms have been agreed upon and are pending physicals. Smith will get a one-year contract extension for $12 million, according to agent Drew Rosenhaus.

Erie Seawolves will be renamed the Moon Mammoths after being picked for rebranding by John Oliver

NEW YORK (AP) — The Detroit Tigers’ Double-A Erie Seawolves will be renamed the Erie Moon Mammoths after being picked by John Oliver of HBO’s “Last Week Tonight.” Oliver devoted a May 4 segment to names and promotions of minor league baseball teams, announcing his rebranding proposal. Two weeks later, he said Erie, based in Pennsylvania, had been selected after 47 submissions. On Sunday, Oliver announced he had picked Moon Mammoths. The name was inspired by the 1991 discovery of woolly mammoth remains by George Moon, a Summit Township resident who found a bone while scuba diving in Lake Pleasant, about 8 miles south of Erie. The mammoth remains are housed in the State Museum of Pennsylvania in Harrisburg.
