Water Conservation Month

OKEECHOBEE – At their April 23 meeting, Okeechobee County declared April to be Water Conservation Month.

A county proclamation was presented to James Cannon of St. Johns River Water Conservation District and Libby Pigman of South Florida Water Management District.

“It is really dry right now,” said Cannon. “Florida is in desperate need of some rain. Many parts of the state are in drought.”

He asked everyone to do their part in conserving water. “Be aware of your water use daily,” he added.

The proclamation states: “Water is a basic and essential need of every living creature, and the State of Florida, Water Management Districts and Okeechobee County are working together to increase awareness about the importance of water conservation.

“Every business, industry, school and citizen can make a difference when it comes to conserving and saving water and thus promoting a healthy economy and community.

“Okeechobee County has always encouraged and supported water conservation through various educational programs and special events.

“Okeechobee County and the State of Florida have designated April, typically a dry month when water demands are most acute, Florida’s Water Conservation Month, to educate citizens about how they can help save Florida’s precious water resources.

“Outdoor irrigation comprises a large portion of water use. Okeechobee County will encourage citizens and businesses to focus on improving outdoor irrigation efficiency.

“This year marks the 27th year of Water Conservation Month, and this year’s focus is ensuring that outdoor irrigation systems operate efficiently by using properly functioning rain shutoff devices. By making sure these devices are installed, connected, and working as intended, our community can prevent unnecessary watering, reduce waste, and make better use of the rainfall we receive.”
