OKEECHOBEE – Rodeo fans are in for a treat in August with a variety of events featuring cowboys and cowgirls of all ages.
The All Florida Junior Rodeo Association (AFJRA) will kick off the new school year with a junior rodeo at Okeechobee Agri-Civic Center, 4601 SR 710, on Saturday, Aug. 16 and Sunday Aug. 17. The association is open to children age 5 to 14 who compete in amateur rodeo events throughout the state. Rodeo events start at 10 a.m. both days. On Sunday Cowboy Church will be at 9 a.m. Events for boys and girls include: Bareback Steer Riding, Calf Roping, Barrel Racing, Breakaway Calf Roping, Chute Dogging, Goat Tying, Team Roping, Pole bending, Bull/Steer Riding, and Cutting.
Florida Junior High Rodeo Association (FJHSRA) will compete at the Agri-Civic Center Aug. 23 and 24. Rodeo events start at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 23 and at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 24. Cowboy church will be from 9 to 9:30 a.m. on Sunday. FJHRA offers a variety of rodeo events for students in grades 6-8, preparing them for the high school level. These events include both timed and rough stock competitions, with categories like Barrel Racing, Pole Bending, Goat Tying, Breakaway Roping, Chute Dogging, Team Roping, and Ribbon Roping, as well as Bareback Steer Riding and Bull Riding.
Also at the Okeechobee Agri-Civic Center, Aug. 29, 30 and 31, the Cowtown Classic will include American Quarter Horse Association, Versatility Ranch Horse and National Reined Cow Horse Association plus Ranch Rail and Ranch Riding special events, Dayworking Derby and more.
The Pete Clemons Labor Day Rodeo is set for Aug. 30 and 31 at the Historic Okeechobee Cattlemen’s Arena, 1885 U.S. Highway 441 N. Gates open at 5 p.m. Mutton Bustin’ starts at 6:30 p.m. Rodeo events start at 7 p.m. This is a PRCA (Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association) rodeo with events such as bull riding, calf roping, bronc riding and barrel racing.
Mutton Bustin' signus begin at 5 p.m. on Aug. 30 and Aug. 31, on a first-come basis. Slots are limited. Children must be at least 3 years old and weigh less than 60 pounds. A parent or close relative must accompany the child. Helmets will be provided. Chidlren must wear long pants and sturdy, closed-toed shoes.
