COP volunteer retires

OKEECHOBEE — Last week was a bittersweet moment for the Okeechobee County Sheriff's Office Citizen Observer Patrol. We said goodbye to one of our long-term members as she announced her retirement from the program.

Civilian Volunteer Sgt. Ruth Munger started nineteen (19) years ago with the O.C.S.O. - C.O.P. and will be moving closer to family over the east coast.

Ruth has donated thousands of hours, that's thousands, over the nineteen years of dedication to the safety and well-being of our community. Her presence and that of her late husband, Civilian Volunteer Capt. John Munger will be deeply missed.

Sheriff Noel E. Stephen wished her well and gave a small thank-you speech for the many years dedicated to our community. At the same time, Undersheriff - Major Michael Hazellief told an amusing and exciting story about one of her encounters with the C.O.P. at a luncheon in her honor.

During her final meeting, the Sheriff's liaison, Corporal Jack Nash, presented her with a longevity appreciation plaque on behalf of us here and the Sheriff's Office.
