OKEECHOBEE -- Okeechobee County Sheriff's Office has begun a new campaign to hopefully slow down speeders by reminding them of the danger to children. Recently, a YouTube video was posted featuring Cpl. Jack Nash and his young son as they drove home in Nash's truck.
The video begins by stating, "Annually, almost 400 children age 15 and under are killed by getting hit by a vehicle according to Parents.com."
The video shows Nash and his son smile at each other as they travel, suddenly, children are seen in the road on bikes, skates and skate boards.
The video states, "Speeding in residential areas causes three basic types of harm: It makes citizens fear for their children's safety. It makes pedestrians and bicyclists fer for their safety. It increases the risk of vehicle crashes."
Finally, Sheriff Noel E. Stephen is seen with two children, holding signs reading, "Drive like your kids live here." As they stand there, a truck speeds past them beneath a 20 mph speed limit sign. He pleads with the community, "Please, it only takes a second to pay attention to your speed and where you are at."
