OKEECHOBEE — Access to reliable transportation remains a major challenge for families living in rural communities. In fact, nearly 40% of individuals in rural America face difficulties getting to essential services. For expectant mothers, this barrier can have serious implications, especially in areas like Okeechobee where access to local maternal healthcare is limited. Missed or delayed prenatal and postpartum care can increase the risk of complications for both mother and baby.

In response, the Okeechobee Maternal Care Task Force is actively working to address these challenges and find sustainable, long-term transportation solutions. As an immediate step, the Healthy Start Coalition of Okeechobee has partnered with the Treasure Coast Maternity Center to bring the MOM Mobile maternity care bus to the community. This mobile unit will provide high-quality prenatal and postpartum care directly to patients, helping bridge the gap while larger solutions are explored.

While the MOM Mobile is an important and impactful resource, it is only a temporary solution. The coalition continues to seek partnerships and innovative strategies to ensure long-term, reliable transportation options for expectant families in Okeechobee County.

Services are available to individuals who live in Okeechobee County and are currently pregnant or recently postpartum. Community members and organizations interested in supporting this effort or learning how to get involved are encouraged to reach out at giving@okeehealthystart.org.
