OKEECHOBEE — An inmate of the Okeechobee County Jail was charged with attempted escape and criminal mischief after reportedly digging a hole in his cell. On Oct. 31 Sergeant Aric Majere discovered a concealed hole in a wall of one of the segregation cells. Inmate Jack Owen Albritton, 35, was reportedly the only inmate housed in this cell during the entire month of October. Earlier in the evening, Deputy Taylor Enfinger reported a hole in a different cell, and in the course of the investigation into that hole, the other cells were searched. Sgt. Majere saw the concealed hole in Albritton’s cell and used a knife to open it. Inside the hole, he found an inmate’s uniform shirt. When he pulled the shirt out, he saw a deep hole. The damage appeared to be extensive, and the cell cannot be used until it is repaired.
The incident report notes the cell was searched on Oct. 8, and there was no damage to that wall at that time. There was a small hole in the wall near the gate of the cell on the 8th, and on the 31st, it was found to be much larger and covered with paper and paint.
Lieutenant Randy Worth and Deputy Enfinger searched the phone cart and found a piece of metal wrapped in cloth hidden in a space beneath the phone.
Albritton’s bond was set at $6,000.
