OKEECHOBEE -- A 47-year-old Miami man was charged with felony criminal mischief after reportedly damaging a window on an Amtrak train. On Saturday, April 24 at approximately 5 p.m., City Police Officer Mark Lanning was dispatched to the Okeechobee Train station regarding a disturbance. Dispatch advised him a passenger on an incoming train was angry and had broken a window.
When the train arrived at the station, Lanning and several other officers entered the train to confront the man causing the disturbance. When they talked to Ruben Mendibur, he reportedly told them the train had been stuck for 20 minutes and he and other passengers had gotten upset, wanting some fresh air. According to the arrest report, Mendibur told officers he popped open the window to get some air.
The conducter told officers the windows are sealed and not made to be opened. The damage is estimated at over $1,000. Mendibur's bond was set at $1,000.
