OKEECHOBEE — Travis McCrummen was sentenced to six years in state prison after pleading no contest to two charges of burglary of a dwelling and one of failure to appear. McCrummen was arrested in March 2018. He was originally charged with armed burglary, dealing in stolen property, and five counts grand theft of a firearm, but the grand theft and dealing in stolen property charge were later dropped.
On March 28, Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Deputy William Jolly was dispatched to a residence on Northeast 21st Way in regards to a suspicious incident complaint. When he arrived, he spoke with a man who told him he had purchased a generator earlier in the day from McCrummen and was concerned it might be stolen. He said he heard there was a burglary off of Northwest 358th Boulevard.
Jolly found a gate to a home on Northwest 358th Boulevard had been removed from its hinges, and he entered the property to see if it was secure. He found the back door to the home pried open and the house ransacked. Two Conex boxes on the property were also broken into.
The homeowners, who live out of town, told Jolly they would come right away. They also said they kept a generator in one of the Conex boxes. When the couple arrived and looked through their home, they told the deputy five firearms were also missing. In addition, he said he had a trail camera on the property and it had captured the image of a woman wearing a camouflage jacket and carrying two binoculars around her neck. The woman was later identified as Nicole Fortier, and she reportedly admitted to breaking in and taking the jacket and binoculars but said she did not know anything about stolen guns.
At the time of his arrest, McCrummen denied any knowledge of a burglary, but three years later, entered a no contest plea.
Fortier has entered a no contest plea to burglary and petit theft is scheduled to be sentenced on June 11.
