Nine unlocked vehicles burglarized this week

Posted

OKEECHOBEE — Nine auto burglaries were reported early Saturday morning on April 10. All of the burglaries took place on Southeast 30th Parkway. Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Deputy Skyler Casian was dispatched to the area after calls began coming in to 911 regarding the thefts.

At one home, the residents left the doors unlocked on two vehicles and both were rifled through. Items reported stolen were a purse, a wallet, a checkbook, debit and credit cards and $350 in cash.

While responding to a second call in the area, Casian found multiple identification cards, debit cards and credit cards laying in the road. While collecting them, a man reported his car had been broken into and several of the found items belonged to him. He was still missing a wallet, driver’s license, fishing license, social security card and a paycheck. A woman said she was missing a tennis bracelet. They had not realized the theft occurred until they saw Casian collecting items in the road. Their vehicles were left unlocked.

At a third home, a woman said she parked her unlocked car on her carport the night before, and went out to check on it after a call from a neighbor telling her of the burglaries. She found her car door slightly ajar and items inside were scattered throughout the inside. She said she was missing $8 from inside the car.

Another burglary was reported a little later in the morning, and Deputy Tyler Cox responded. The vehicle owner said he heard about the burglaries and went out to check his SUV. He immediately noticed a bottle of prescription medication was missing from his center console. His vehicle was also unlocked.

The fifth report came in at approximately noon. The homeowner heard about the burglaries and checked his home surveillance cameras to check on his own vehicles. The video showed an unknown male and female open the doors of his pickup and rummage through the contents. It did not appear that they took anything. The family car was not shown on the video but had also been broken into and money was missing from inside the center console. The console itself was damaged. These vehicles were also left unlocked.

There are no suspects at this time, because the suspects wore masks and hoodies.

Sheriff Noel E. Stephen said, “Get yourself into a routine before you go to bed each night. Lock your front doors. Lock your vehicles. Close the garage door. Turn your motion lights on, and set your alarm system. These steps will deter most wandering thieves.”
