November is World Kindness Day

Sometimes the smallest gestures can make a person’s day completely turn around, whether it is a simple smile or holding a door. Nov. 13 is World Kindness Day. If we expect our children to learn kindness, we must be their teachers!

“World Kindness Day is celebrated annually on Nov. 13. On this day, participants attempt to make the world a better place by celebrating and promoting good deeds and pledging acts of kindness, either as individuals or as organizations.

World Kindness Day was first launched in 1998 by The World Kindness Movement, an organization formed at a 1997 Tokyo conference of like-minded kindness organizations from around the world. There are currently over 28 nations involved in The World Kindness Movement which is not affiliated with any religion or political movement. The mission of the World Kindness Movement and World Kindness Day is to create a kinder world by inspiring individuals and nations towards greater kindness.” (www.randomactsofkindness.org)

Never fear if you are running out of ideas. Here are some of the simplest forms of kindness. Wave at a school bus as it goes by. Write an email to your child’s principal complimenting your child’s favorite teacher. Hold the door for someone. Call your mom! Say good morning to that random person you walk by every morning, on your way to work. Go make copies for your co-worker. Compliment someone.

If you have a little bit more time on your hands, put pennies heads up on the sidewalk at your favorite place. Walk a dog at your local animal shelter. Write a letter to your mail person. Make a hand-made card for someone important in your life.

If you want to take a day to spread kindness, go visit people in assisted living facilities or the nursing home. Volunteer at a food pantry. Get a group of coworkers together to pick up trash.

In a tight knit community like Okeechobee, kindness can be shown in so many different ways. Remember on Nov. 13, let’s make an effort as a community to put our best foot forward and be the kind of change we want to see in the world — one smile and kind deed at a time.

In the poignant words of Princess Diana, “Carry out a random act of kindness, with no expectation of reward, safe in the knowledge that one day someone might do the same for you.”
