OKEECHOBEE — Okeechobee County Fire Rescue was hard at work last week taking 150 calls of various types.

Between April 30 and May 6, firefighters responded to 109 EMS, seven motor vehicle accidents, four brush fires, one cooking fire, two building fires, one electrical fire, two rubbish fires, one gas leak, three smoke scares, two power lines down and 18 miscellaneous calls.

Below are some of the calls OCFR responded to during this time period:

  • On May 3 at approximately 6:30 p.m., OCFR was dispatched to the 900 block of Northwest 10th Street regarding a building fire. While en route, they were told the fire was already out, but they proceeded to the address. They found a single-story structure with all occupants out of the home. The renter stated that she was cooking when she realized the contents in the pot had caught fire. Her husband put water on the fire which caused it to flash and then go out. There was smoke damage to the cabinets and ceiling. The stove was also damaged. The breaker was turned off, and the tenant was told not to use the stove, and to contact the property owner. One patient was found on the scene with burns to their hand and foot and was transported to Raulerson Hospital.
  • On May 6 at approximately 11 a.m., OCFR was dispatched to the 2600 block of Northeast 112th Avenue regarding a tractor fire. When they arrived, they were led through a cow barn and down a dirt road where they found the tractor fully involved. The tractor was attached to an auger transfer pumper that had been running for about 2.5 hours without any problem, but then they noticed smoke coming from under the tractor. The fire was extinguished. The manager said damages were approximately $55,000.
  • On May 6 at approximately 5 p.m., OCFR was dispatched to the 3600 block of Southwest 19th Street regarding a building fire. The 911 caller said a stove was on fire. When they arrived, they found the stove and vent hood burned and melted. The cabinets were severely blackened and charred. The homeowner told firefighters she was preparing to make French fries and stepped away for a moment. When she walked back into the room, the pan had ignited. She was able to extinguish the flames using a wet paper towel.
