OHS girls basketball wins district championship

JENSEN BEACH– The Lady Brahmans are district basketball champions for the first time in over twenty years.

The Okeechobee High School girls’ varsity basketball team defeated the Fort Pierce Westwood Lady Panthers 50-13.

Okeechobee dominated the entire first half of the district championship, especially defensively. Junior Adryauna Baker’s aggressive and tenacious defensive play frustrated Westwood’s offense all game.

The Lady Brahmans started fast and kept their foot on the gas for all four quarters. OHS was already up 25-8 late in the second half when sophomore Leta Adamo hit an absolutely clutch three pointer to go up 28-8.

A few minutes later Adamo made an athletic save of an errant pass, then was able to get the ball to sophomore Semaj Jasper who laid it into the basket for two points.

At halftime Okeechobee led 32-11.

The second half was more of the same for the Lady Brahmans- suffocating defense and back breaking shots on offense. Westwood had trouble achieving much of anything on the court.

The championship win functioned somewhat as a revenge game for Okeechobee, who lost to Westwood by one point after the Lady Panthers stole a 38-37 victory from the Lady Brahmans on Jan. 27.

Okeechobee now gets to host he regional quarterfinal at OHS. The Lady Brahmans are set to face the Northeast Lady Hurricanes out of Oakland Park in Broward County.

Northeast is  8-7 this season and coming off a 73-28 loss to American Heritage in their district championship. Okeechobee will have to limit Northeast sophomore Mariah McKenzie, who leads the Lady Hurricanes in scoring his year.

If they can get past Northeast the Lady Brahmans will advance to the regional semifinal to either Westwood or American Heritage on Feb. 16.
