Okeechobee County Fire Rescue responded to the following calls.
Okeechobee County Fire Rescue (OCFR) responded to a call on Northeast 128th Avenue at approximately 2 p.m. on May 23 regarding a controlled burn. The Florida Forest Service requested a water tanker to stand by. OCFR was released from the scene approximately two hours later.
OCFR responded to a call on Southwest Ninth Street at approximately 1:15 p.m. on May 26 regarding a building fire. When they arrived, they found a 225 sq. ft. shed completely involved in smoke and flames. A plastic storage container east of the shed was also involved. Spot fires were seen in neighboring yards but were quickly extinguished. The crew determined the fire was caused by faulty electrical system. The owner told firefighters he had been in the shed just minutes prior to the fire. A passing motorist notified him of the flames. He called 911 and attempted to put the fire out with a hose but was unsuccessful.
OCFR responded to a call on U.S. 441 North at approximately 2:15 a.m. on May 26 regarding a building fire. When they arrived, they found a fully involved structure. It appeared to have been recently demolished. A neighbor suggested someone might have been burning construction debris. He said he and the property owner put the fire out, and the owner went home, but then the fire flared back up, and he could not control it.
On May 26, OCFR responded to a call on Southwest Third Street regarding a building fire. The call came in at approximately 3 p.m. When they arrived, they found a single-family wood structure with 50% involvement. There was a nearby SUV 75% involved. The family’s dog was a casualty of the fire. The fire was determined to be accidental due to faulty wiring.
On May 27 at approximately 2 p.m., OCFR responded to a call on State Road 70 East regarding a natural vegetation fire. The crew was asked to assist the Florida Forest Service with a wildfire that had been burning for several days. They were asked to hold a line and prevent the fire from crossing it.
On May 28 at approximately 3:30 p.m., OCFR responded to a call on Southwest 40th Avenue regarding a brush fire. When they arrived, they found a 2-acre fire surrounded on three sides by water. The fire was caused by a lightning strike.
