Okeechobee Fire Report

Okeechobee firefighters responded to the following calls last week:

• From April 12 through April 18 there were 24 EMS, two fire related (one county assist and one dumpster fire), four motor vehicle accidents and two calls canceled.

• On April 16 at approximately 8:46 p.m. OCFR responded to burning wooden pallets at 3396 Southwest 21st Street. OCFR crew spoke to the owner and advised him that he was illegally burning. The owner stated he was trying to have a warming fire while he cooked. Owner stated he would reduce the size of the fire and not put any more pallets on it. They cleared the site at 9:21 p.m.

• On April 16 at approximately 7:51 p.m. OCFR responded to a brush fire at S.E. 28th Street. They extinguished the pile and the site was cleared.

• On April 13 at approximately 9:24 OCFR responded to a small brush fire that was growing quickly at 1197 S.W. 134th Avenue. Upon arrival they found a small 20 X 40 foot area of grass and underbrush burning. Entry was made into the property and fire was extinguished. FPL arrived on scene and checked power equipment. OCFR cleared the scene.

• On April 13 at approximately 5:09 p.m. OCFD responded to smoke coming from battery compartment on a road sign located at 908 U.S. 441 S.E. Upon arrival they made contact with the tow truck driver. The tow truck driver stated that he spun the sign around so the he could flip it back onto the wheels of the trailer that the road sign was attached too. The road sign has a solar panel and a battery compartment that has six batteries in it. The battery box is under the trailer at this time. OCFD asked the tow truck driver to flip the sign over onto the wheel so that the battery box could be accessed. Once the battery box was accessed the batteries where disconnected. The batteries where connected to a hydraulic pump. Once the batteries were disconnected, the tow truck driver then loaded the trailer with sign on it onto the tow truck’s tow bed. OCFR then cleared the scene and returned to station.

• On April 15 at approximately 11:59 a.m. OCFR responded to several small piles of leaves burning at 8945 U.S. 441 S.E. The property owner was explained the rules about having small debris fires and was advised to extinguish a few of the piles to limit the smoke that was being emitted to the road way. OCFR cleared the scene.

• On April 16 at approximately 2:24 p.m. EMS responded to give mutual aid at a vehicle fire at Highway 60 in Osceola County.

• On April 16 at approximately 3:59 p.m. OCFR responded to a brush fire in an open area including farmland and field at 2940 N.E. 96th Avenue. They waited for power to be disconnected by FPL and then extinguished the fire along the tree line. The site was cleared at 5:06 p.m. The site was cleared by 5:06. The fire was caused by failure of equipment or heat source.

• OCFR responded to a structure fire located at 2727 U.S. 441 Southeast. Upon arrival they found a mobile home unoccupied with smoke coming out of a roof vent. The fire was located in the ceiling of the master bathroom. OCFR extinguished the fire. Fire was caused by electrical failure.
