Okeechobee County Fire Rescue responded to 278 incidents between March 27 and April 9. These included 18 smoke or fire, 17 motor vehicle accidents, one invalid assists, 209 emergency medical assists and 33 miscellaneous calls.
Of 201 possible transports, 49 were refused or used another method of transportation.
Below are a few of the highlights:
- On March 27 at approximately 7:15 p.m., OCFR responded to a building on Northeast 11th Street regarding a building fire. When they arrived, they found a single-story single-family CBS home with light smoke showing. They found a meter box arcing with light smoke. The homeowner said the power was off. In the laundry room, they found the panel box with arcing, burnt wires coming through the walls. Red Cross was notified for the family who needed a place to stay until the power was restored.
- On March 30 at approximately 2:45 p.m., OCFR responded to Southeast Fourth Street regarding a building fire. When they arrived, the homeowner told them she smelled smoke coming from upstairs. In a small attic scuttle hole, they found the source of the smoke was coming from smoldering insulation. The insulation was removed, and the fire was cooled with water. The homeowner was told to call an electrician.
- On March 31 at approximately 7 p.m., OCFR was dispatched to State Road 70 East regarding a brush fire. When they arrived, they found a small 1–2-acre fire in the back of a heavy vegetation area. The report notes the 911 caller said the fire was close to the New Testament Baptist Church. The caller also said homeless people had been living in that area.
- On April 1 at approximately 1 a.m., OCFR responded to Northwest 399th Street regarding a passenger vehicle fire. When they arrived, they were told the vehicle had been racing up and down the street and then parked in the driveway. It started to flame, and when firefighter arrived, it was fully engulfed with a large pile of fuel burning underneath. This fire spread to nearby brush causing a 60x30 brush fire. The homeowner was attempting to control the fire with a water hose.
- On April 2 at approximately 1:15 p.m., OCFR responded to U.S. 441 North regarding a brush fire. When they arrived, they found a fully involved vehicle in the middle of a half-acre fire. The vehicle did not appear to be the cause of the fire. The vehicle was a total loss. DOF responded as well and cut a fence on Northeast Ninth Avenue in order to get their dozer on the property. The total size of the fire was determined to be 1.5 acres.
- On April 2 at approximately 7 p.m., OCFR responded to U.S. 441 North regarding a brush fire. When they arrived, they found an approximately 10’x30’ fire beside the roadway. It appeared to be a reignition of a previous brush fire.
- On April 5 at approximately 1:15 p.m., OCFR responded to Northwest 256th Street regarding a brush fire. When they arrived, they found approximately 15 acres burning. The DOF responded as well and was able to contain the fire with plow lines.
- On April 5 at approximately 3:30 p.m., OCFR responded to U.S. 441 North regarding a brush fire. When they arrived, they found DOF already on scene. There was a large fire in a mixture of cut grass and piles of stumps.
