OKEECHOBEE — Okeechobee County Fire Rescue responded to 319 calls between Feb. 13 and Feb. 26. 238 of those calls were for emergency medical services. 12 were for fires. 20 were for auto accidents and they rest were for aircraft standby, public assistance, etc.
- On Feb. 15 at approximately 9:15 a.m., OCFR was dispatched to the Fort Drum Service Plaza regarding a vehicle fire. When they arrived, they found a BMW fully involved in flames. After putting out the fire, they spoke to the vehicle owner who told them he walked into the plaza and came out to find the engine compartment of his car on fire.
- On Feb. 16 at approximately 111:15 a.m., OCFR was dispatched to the 1600 block of Northwest 50th Avenue regarding a forest fire. When they arrived, they were told the fire started out as a controlled burn but crossed onto another piece of property, pushed by the wind. The Department of Forestry took charge of the scene. The fire was extinguished and the team was cleared from the site.
- On Feb. 17 at approximately 3 p.m., OCFR was dispatched to the 10500 block of Northwest Fifth Terrace regarding a vehicle fire. When they arrived, they found an unoccupied vehicle fully engulfed. The owner said he had been working on the truck and drives it around the block once a week but this time, he noticed smoke under the hood. He opened the hood and discovered fire. The vehicle was uninsured.
- On Feb. 18 at approximately 5:15 p.m., OCFR responded to a call in the 4100 block of U.S. 441 South regarding a structure fire. When they arrived, they found a small Chickee Hut on fire. The homeowner was using a hose to try to put out the fire. The fire was extinguished quickly with minimal damage.
- On Feb. 21 at approximately 8:30 a.m., OCFR was dispatched to mile marker 184 on the Florida Turnpike regarding a vehicle fire. When they arrived, they found a trailer that had caught fire in another county. The fire was extinguished in that county but then rekindled during transport. The trailer and contents were a total loss prior to the rekindle.
- On Feb. 25 at approximately 6:45 p.m., OCFR responded to a call regarding a brush fire in the 28300 block of Northeast 55th When they arrived, the property owner told them he saw three people running from the fire. The fire was extinguished without help from the Department of Forestry.
- On Feb. 26 at approximately 2:45 p.m., OCFR responded to a call in the 1100 block of Northwest 368th Drive regarding a forest fire. When they arrived, they found approximately 2 acres on fire. The property was a wooded area in the process of being cleared. DOF arrived and cut a plow line. The report notes it appeared someone had been burning and the fire got away from them.
- On Feb. 26 at approximately 2:45 p.m., OCFR was dispatched to the 21100 block of Northwest 260th Street regarding a brush fire. When they arrived, they found a 5-to-7-acre fire with heavy fuels and wind pushing out of the north. DOF was on the scene and put a line around the fire.
