FORT PIERCE — An Okeechobee man and woman died in a St. Lucie traffic crash.
According to a Florida Highway Patrol press release at noon on Thursday, April 4, a 2010 Ford Ranger operated by Gary Gerber, 44, of Okeechobee, was traveling northbound on West Midway Road at the intersection of State Road 70.
At the same time a 2004 Freighter semi operated by Javier Gomez, 53, of Okeechobee, was traveling eastbound on State Road 70 in the inside line.
The Ford entered the intersection in an attempt to travel onto westbound S.R. 70 and drove directly into the path of the semi.
The front of the semi struck the left side of the Ford in the inside lane of eastbound S.R. 70.
The ford was redirected to the east and overturned in the grass median.
The semi overturned onto its right side and came to rest in the grass median where its trailer became separated for its tractor cab.
It was reported that Mr. Gerber and his passenger Tammy Radford, 49, of Okeechobee were pronounced deceased on the scene by St. Lucie County Fire Rescue personnel.
Mr. Gomez received minor injuries in the crash.
The crash was investigated by FHP Trooper Corporal Callaghan.
The crash remained under investigation at the time of the press release.
