OKEECHOBEE — An Okeechobee man reported being scammed out of $600 by a fake bail bondsman last month.
Information released by the Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office reveals the scam was reported on March 7 at approximately 5:15 p.m. The victim spoke to Deputy Reese Baker at the sheriff’s office. The man told him that his son was arrested earlier that day, and when a man claiming to be over bonding and intake, the victim believed him. The victim said the man told him he was with the Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office and that he explained the victim’s son would only be released if he wore an ankle monitor. He said the cost for the use of the monitor was $600 and could only be paid over the phone. The victim said he paid $500 using one debit card and $100 with a second card.
The deputy told the victim to notify his bank so the bank could help him dispute the fraudulent transactions. He added that the victim should contact him if he had any further information.
