Okeechobee teacher arrested

Posted
OKEECHOBEE -- On March 2, 2026, the Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office was made aware of concerning communication between an incarcerated female who was confirmed to be a student within the Okeechobee County School District who had recently turned 18 and an adult male, who was currently employed as a teacher. During the initial review of the communication, it was determined that the adult male had a teacher, student relationship with the student. Based on this information, an investigation was immediately initiated.

The adult male was later identified as Laike Ikavis McNeil, 36. The initial information was discovered through monitored electronic visitation at the Okeechobee County Jail, where McNeil was observed communicating with the student and providing financial assistance to her inmate account.

This investigation was led by School Resource Unit Sergeant Christina Torres, who immediately initiated follow-up actions upon receiving the information, to include conducting interviews, gathering digital evidence, and coordinating the review of electronic communications associated with the student.

As the investigation progressed, evidence revealed ongoing contact between McNeil and the student across multiple platforms, both during and after the student’s time within the school system. Investigators identified patterns of communication that extended beyond a professional or educational relationship.

Based on this information, search warrants were obtained for digital devices and associated accounts. A detailed review of records returned from these warrants, along with additional investigative steps, further established the nature and extent of the relationship. Technical data, including account activity and subscriber information, supported the findings of the investigation.

Through the course of the investigation, sufficient evidence was developed to establish probable cause that McNeil, while in a position of authority within the school district, engaged in unlawful conduct involving a student. The findings indicate a pattern of behavior consistent with grooming and the development of an inappropriate personal relationship.

As a result of this investigation, McNeil was arrested and charged with the following:
• Authority Figure Engaging in a Romantic Relationship with a Student (F.S. 800.101)
• Use of a Two-Way Communications Device to Facilitate a Felony (F.S. 934.215)

The Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office works closely with the Okeechobee County School Board and maintains an open working relationship when addressing any crimes involving students. Questions regarding McNeil’s employment status should be directed to the Okeechobee County School Board.

Anyone who may have additional information related to this case, or believes they may be a victim, is urged to contact School Resource Unit Sergeant Christina Torres at the Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office.
This remains an active investigation, and further updates will be provided as they become available.
