“And Jesus sat down, called the twelve, and said to them, “If anyone desires to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all.”
Humility is having lowliness of mind by considering others before yourself (Philippians 2:3-4).
There is no lower “position” than a servant. Jesus says, “To be first in the kingdom of God, you must be a servant to others.”
The question becomes, “What does a servant do?”
Do I have to wash other people’s feet?
Do I have to sacrifice my life unto death?
Jesus showed us the extreme acts of humility and servanthood by doing these very things. He washed His disciple’s feet not only as an example of humility but also showing the disciples that the very reason He came was to serve others. He came to sacrifice His life for many.
You may not be “called” to wash another person’s feet but if God humbled Himself to one of the lowest positions imaginable to the Jews, then we should have no issues serving one another in any other capacity.
The only way to defeat pride in your life is by serving others.
I used to be a manger of a restaurant, and I always began my server meetings with, “You cannot be prideful and still serve other people.” As a server, your job is to serve others.
And the more you are thinking about others and how to serve them, the easier it will become to “humble yourself.”
Jesus was Father-centered and others centered. He always exalted the Father and He spent most of His time serving others. And this should be our mindset as well.
Jesus was our greatest example of humility and servant hood.
Each morning start your day and ask God, “How can I serve You and serve people today?”
