Reflections from the Pulpit: Wisdom in the quietness

“Fools vent their anger, but the wise quietly hold it back.” -Proverbs 29:11

Have you ever heard someone say, “I wear my emotions on my sleeve”?

What they often mean is, “I say whatever I feel like saying, whenever I feel like saying it.” If it hurts someone or comes out in anger, they use that as an excuse.

God tells us it is foolish to let anger spill out without control. A person who lacks self-control may say things that bring embarrassment to themselves or others. When anger rules us, people see us instead of seeing Jesus in us.

There is a saying for moments when you want to speak but choose not to: “Hold your tongue.”

The Bible says, “The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” -Proverbs 18:21.

We must remember that our words reflect Jesus Christ. People are always watching, and some may even be looking for us to fail.

That is why we must be careful with every word we speak. Our speech should point others to the grace, patience, and truth of Christ rather than giving our emotions the final say.

Allow anger to have its course but beware when you dim the light of God within you by “venting your anger” toward others.

Wise men consider the circumstances. They hold every thought captive under the subject of Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5) and demonstrate self-control which reveals the Holy Spirit in them!

When we pause before we speak, we make room for God’s wisdom to guide our hearts and words. In that moment of restraint, we honor Christ, protect others from harm, and show the quiet strength that comes from walking in the Spirit.

“An angry person starts fights; a hot-tempered person commits all kinds of sin.” – Proverbs 29:22.

When anger is left unchecked, it can quickly damage relationships and weaken our witness. But when we surrender our emotions to God, He teaches us to respond with wisdom, patience, and the peace that honors Him.

What are you being controlled by today? Your feelings or the Spirit of God?

Each day gives us a choice: to be led by passing emotions or by the steady voice of the Holy Spirit. When we yield to God, our words and actions become a testimony of His grace at work within us.

As we submit our hearts to the Lord, He helps us speak with gentleness, patience, and grace. In doing so, we become a light to others and reflect the transforming power of Christ in everyday moments.

Be wise. Be humble. Be like Christ.
