Sales tax holiday planned in July

Floridians will enjoy a sales tax holiday on outdoor supplies in July.

During the 2024 Florida Freedom Month Sales Tax Holiday, you may purchase admissions to music events, sporting events, cultural events, state park annual passes, and fitness facilities, as well as electric scooters, certain boating and water activity supplies, camping supplies, fishing supplies, general outdoor supplies, and residential pool supplies, exempt from sales tax. The tax holiday begins on Monday, July 1, 2024, and ends on Wednesday, July 31, 2024.

The tax holiday includes admissions to: Live music events,live sporting events, movies, museum entry, state park entry, ballets, plays, musical theater performances, fairs, festivals, cultural events, and membership clubs providing physical fitness facilities.

The tax holiday also includes:

• Electric scooters with a sales price of $500 or less: Vehicles with two or fewer wheels, with or without a seat or saddle for the rider, which is equipped to be propelled by an electric motor and which weighs less than 75 pounds, is less than 2 feet wide, and is designed for a maximum speed of less than 35 miles per hour

• Boating and water activity supplies including: Canoes and kayaks with a price of $500 or less; paddleboards and surfboards with a sales price of $300 or less; water skis, wakeboards, kneeboards and inflatable water tubes or floats with a sales price of $150 or less; life jackets, coolers, paddles and oars with a price of $75 or less; safety flares with a price of $50 less; recreational pool tubes, pool floats, inflatable chairs and pool toys with a price of $35 or less; snorkles, goggles and swim masks with a price of $25 or less.

• Camping supplies including: Tents with a sales price of $200 or less; sleeping bags, portable hammocks, camping stoves and collapsible camping chairs with a price of $30 or less; camping lanterns and flashlights with a price of $30 or less.

• Fishing supplies including: Rods and reels under $150 if sold as a set; rods and reels under $75 if sold separately; tackle boxes or bags with a sales price of $30 or less; bait or fishing tackle under $10 if sold together or $5 if sold separately,

• General outdoor supplies including: Bicycles with a sales price under $500; gas or charcoal grills with a price under $250; binoculars with a price under $200; sunglasses with a price under $100; hydration packs and bicycle helmets with a price under $50 (bicycle helmets marketed for youth are permanently exempt); water bottles with a price under $30; and sunscreen, sunblock or insect repellent under $15.

• Pool supplies including: Pool and spa chemicals purchased by an individual with a sales price of $150 or less; pool and spa replacement parts, nets, filters, lights and covers with a sales price under $100.

If you purchase an item that would otherwise qualify for the sales tax exemption but costs more than the price limits stated above, the item is not exempt, and you must pay sales tax on the entire price of the item.

The 2024 Florida Freedom Month Sales Tax Holiday does not apply to rentals of any eligible items or to sales in a theme park, entertainment complex, public lodging establishment, or airport.

In addition, if the original purchaser of an admission subsequently resells the admission, the original purchaser must collect sales tax on the full sales price of the resold admission.

Also, supplies used for commercial fishing purposes are not tax-exempt.

House Bill 7073 from the 2024 regular legislative session was signed into law on May 7, 2024. The law contains four tax relief holidays and specifies the time frame for each holiday. Disaster preparedness tax holidays are June 1-14 and Aug. 24-Sept. 6; Back to School tax holiday runs July 29-Aug. 11; Tool Time tax holiday runs Sept. 1-7.
