Urgent scam alert! Caller spoofing OCSO number

Posted

OKEECHOBEE — We know that someone is using our main office line of 863-763-3117 through a "spoof" calling system to mimic our actual number calling Okeechobee County and Glades County residents.

The callers use names of current or past employees, which gives the person receiving the call the immediate sense of trust that they are speaking to an Okeechobee Sheriff's Officer Employee.

At no time will the Okeechobee County Sheriff's Office call you and demand money instead of an arrest for fines, a missed court date, or warrants. Their tactics also become demanding and threatening when questioned.

What is phone spoofing, exactly? Phone spoofing uses fake caller ID information to mask the source of an incoming call. Scammers typically spoof phone numbers to appear from a particular location or organization, increasing the chances of people picking up and falling for their cons. The source of numbers is rarely ever traceable. Most stem from overseas in countries like Jamaica or Isreal.

What to do if you receive this type of call? Hang up!

OCSO, scam
