OKEECHOBEE — Don Sellers, Okeechobee 4-H leader, mentor, and community leader, was posthumously inducted into the 4-H Hall of Fame Tuesday night, Oct. 6.
He was nominated by Okeechobee County 4-H Advisory Committee. He was nominated because he started Sharpshooters 4-H club in 1995 with five members (Jacob Larson, Charles Syfrett, Ben Noonan, Brittney Conway and Emily Clements) and it grew into one of the largest, most active clubs in Okeechobee.
He taught canning at the cooking camp and answered any horticulture questions the agents in our office could not answer. His degree from UF was in soil chemistry.
The Army tested his IQ at 167, and he never forgot ANYTHING about farming, chemicals, fertilizers, etc.
Sharpshooters was not his first involvement with 4-H or Extension. He was a 4-H volunteer when his children were growing up, in addition to serving on the Okeechobee Youth Livestock Show Committee and Extension Advisory committees in Okeechobee and Palm Beach Counties.
He has been honored by IFAS as a Friend of Extension (by the Ag Agents Association) and was on/chaired several IFAS research committees.
Sellers was born in Okeechobee in 1928 and served in the U.S. Army during both WWII and the Korean War. He passed away in 2013.
