OKEECHOBEE — September is National Suicide Prevention Month in Okeechobee County. At their Sept. 11 meeting, Okeechobee County Commissioners presented proclamations to Our Village Okeechobee, 211 Helpline and Helping People Succeed.
The proclamations state: “September is National Suicide Prevention and Awareness Month and was created to raise the visibility of mental health and proactive suicide prevention resources in our community. Suicide is a major public health concern that affects individuals, families, and communities, transcending all demographic boundaries.
“Each year, thousands of lives are lost to suicide, leaving behind devastating emotional, social, and economic impacts and according to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (A.F.S.P.), more than 49,000 people die by suicide annually in the United States, and according to Hope for the Day, an average of 132 people die by suicide each day.
“Mental health conditions are treatable, and early intervention and support can save lives, and it is essential to foster a culture of openness, empathy, and understanding to reduce the stigma associated with mental illness and suicidal thoughts.
“We recognize the importance of providing resources, education, and support for those struggling with mental health challenges, as well as for survivors of suicide loss.”
