Flag day is June 14. It’s a good time to review the official Flag Code. 

The United States Flag Code establishes advisory rules for display and care of the flag of the United States. It is Section 1 of Title 4 of the United States Code (4 U.S.C. § 1 et seq). 

For example:

• The flag should be displayed from sunrise to sunset.
• If a flag is displayed after dark, it must be illuminated.
• If the flag is not an all-weather flag, it should be taken down in inclement weather.
• The flag should never be allowed to touch the ground or water.
• The flag should not be flown if it is worn, tattered or soiled. If the flag is worn beyond repair, it should be retired in a respectful manner. The American Legion collects worn and tattered flags for disposal in a respectful ceremony.
• It in violation of the flag code to use flag napkins or flag paper plates (such as for 4th of July picnics) because according to the Flag Code, the flag should not be “printed or otherwise impressed on paper napkins or boxes or anything that is designed for temporary use and discard.”
