Two killed in three-vehicle crash on SR 78

OKEECHOBEE -- A motorcyclist and passenger were killed in a three-vehicle accident on State Road 78 in Okeechobee County in the early morning hours of June 2.

 

According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) report, a 50-year-ol Stuart man and a 60-year-old Okeechobee woman were killed in the crash.

 

The report states, the accident occurred at 1:13 a.m. on Sunday, June 2.

According to the FHP report, a 2009 Harley Davidson motorcycle was traveling west on State Road 78 west approximately 2000 feet west of SW 53rd Street. A 2009 Mercury Mariner was eastbound on State Road 78 west. A Ford Mustang was eastbound on State Road 78 west, just west of the Mariner.

 

For unknown reasons, the Harley Davidson drove out of the westbound lane and into the eastbound lane. The front left of the Mariner collided with the left of motorcycle. The motorcyclist, a 50-year-old Stuart man, was projected post-collision and collided with the Mariner’s windshield.

 

Post-collision with the windshield, the motorcyclist came to final rest on the eastbound travel lane, facing west. The Mariner came to final rest on the south grass shoulder, facing east. A passenger on the motorcycle, a 60-year-old Okeechobee woman, was also projected from the motorcycle. The passenger came to rest in the eastbound travel lane.

 

The right side of the Mustang collided with the motorcycle in the eastbound travel lane.

 

Post-collision with the motorcycle, the left side of the Mustang collided with and traveled over the motorcycle passenger. The Mustang came to final rest in the eastbound travel lane, facing east.

 

The motorcycle passenger came to final rest on the north grass shoulder, facing south. Both the driver and passenger of the motorcycle succumbed to injuries sustained as a result of this incident and were pronounced deceased at the scene.

 

The driver of the Mariner, a 76-year-old Stuart man, was not injured. A passenger in the Mariner, a 68-year-old Stuart woman, was also not injured.

 

The driver of the Mustang, a 19-year-old Port St. Lucie man, was not injured.

 

This is still an ongoing investigation, and the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
