UPS store finally reopens after being closed

Posted

The doors of the local UPS Store, at 1414 S. Parrott Ave., are finally open again, after being shuttered for more than three months.

Shortly before Christmas last year, customers were shocked to find the store closed more and more often when they went to check their mail or send a package. The last day the store was open was Dec. 21. Then, with no warning, the doors were locked and the store closed. Customers who had Christmas gifts waiting in their mailboxes were just out of luck because no one could get in and there was no explanation forthcoming.

On Dec. 28, after numerous complaints to corporate headquarters, UPS representatives investigated.

In January, UPS officials made arrangements for a one-time pickup of the mail that was locked inside the building. Since then, those who had mailboxes inside the store have been trapped in a Catch-22 situation.

Because their mail was addressed to a business, they could not legally do a change of address at the post office. Instead, they had to go to the post office and ask if there was any mail being held for them.

Then they had to attempt to remember each and every person who might ever mail them something and send them a change of address notification directly.

Jason Willette, the new owner of the store, says that unfortunately, that is the case any time you use a business as your mailing address because if you change your address, you would be changing the address of the business and everyone else who uses that address. He did say that anyone who had a mailbox there is welcome to come in and talk to him. He would like to meet with each person. They do not have any records from the old store, but if you have records, he will do his best to help you. They are in the process of sorting through the mail that is there now and are trying to locate the owners. For a fee, they will forward mail.

Mr. Willette owns two other UPS stores in Port St. Lucie and has been in the business for 13 years. His general manager, Amberlee Crimmins, has also been in the business for 13 years.

The store has about 95% of its services available and should be completely up and running by the beginning of May. They are still working on getting color copying, the computer rental station and print-from-email services. They are planning to add some new services such as passport photos and DHL international shipping. The store is offering some post office services as well.

The store hours are Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., with UPS pickup at 4:30 p.m., and Saturday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but that may change if they can arrange a Saturday UPS pickup.

The new store phone number is 863-623-4930. They hope to have their website up and running soon.
