OKEECHOBEE- The Yearling Middle School volleyball team celebrated their Eighth-Grade Night before their game against Clewiston and capped the night off with a victory.
The Lady Bulls have 11 eighth-grade players this year and both the varsity and junior varsity squads secured wins against Clewiston in Okeechobee on Sept. 21.
The varsity team defeated Clewiston in two sets, winning a competitive first set 27-25 before dominating the second set 25-7. The JV team also swept Clewiston, winning 25-11 and 25-7.
Multiple Lady Bulls made significant contributions in the varsity game. Camellia Grzech tallied three kills, four aces and an assist. Strong serving carried the JV squad. Taylor Malcolm posted one kill and eight aces, and Samantha Portocarrero turned in one kill with a standout 10 aces. Portocarrero also spent part of the varsity match's first set playing libero. Avery Davis chipped in one kill and four aces, while eighth grader Jocelyn Garcia matched that line with one kill and four aces. Maddi Borowski rounded things out with an ace.
YMS head coach Lindsey Yates says the team has built momentum throughout their season, with strong serving, teamwork and determination on the court.
The win brings Yearling’s record to 10-2 this season. The team had their season opener at the Moore Haven Preseason Classic on August 22 with the varsity team going 5-0 on the day and taking first place out of six teams. The JV team also had a great showing, finishing in third place and only losing in the semifinals to Moore Haven’s varsity team.
Yearling’s season is set to conclude with games against their crosstown rival Osceola Middle School and Pemayetv Emahakv Charter School. YMS and OMS play on Oct. 8, and the game against PEC is set for Oct. 13.
