Okeechobee Historical Society hosts open house

Posted

OKEECHOBEE — The Okeechobee Historical Society wants to invite the community to attend its “Sneak Peek Open House” at the Historical Primitive Baptist Church, 1003 SW Third Avenue on Saturday, May 20, from 9 a.m. until noon.

The Primitive Baptist Church building will be officially 100 years old in May, so it’s entirely fitting to host an event at a “not yet completed, soon to become” museum.

The open house will be featuring the Historical Society’s latest project, “Historic Churches of Okeechobee” banners, to be displayed in the sanctuary of the church. In 1937, there was a WPA project that sent a gentleman to the community to conduct an inventory of all churches active in the area. Those documents gathered from the Florida Memories Project became the focus of research. Through a grant received from the Florida Humanities Council, the Historical Society was able to have these banners prepared.

Future plans include forming a museum dedicated to the history of agriculture in the fellowship hall of the building.

Please be aware that the building has not been completely renovated as of yet but the Historical Society wants to share its vision with the community. Donations of items and money are welcome, if you are so inclined, to help in the mission to preserve the history of this community.

The Historical Society hopes to see you at its Open House!
