Has there ever been a time in your life when you said “Enough is enough!” and you took action towards making your life happier?
I’m sure there has been; we’ve all had those times. It’s the times when we end an unhappy relationship, or start a healthier diet and exercise program, or clean up the clutter that’s been weighing us down. It’s the moment when you make being happy and feeling good a priority over what is comfortable.
The urge to take those actions are innate within us; they are like a GPS system we are born with that’s calling us towards our happiness because, believe it or not, we are meant to be happy. We are meant to live joyful and blissful lives. Author Joseph Campbell says “When you follow your bliss, the universe will open doors for you where there were only walls,” and I can attest to this being true!
What ends up happening, for a lot of people, is that they get so stuck in their comfort zones, limiting beliefs, and playing small that they ignore this routing towards happiness in their internal GPS until life becomes absolutely unbearable and THEN, and only then, do they do something to right what feels so wrong in their lives.
It doesn’t have to be this way; indeed, there is a better way. Through the practice of daily routines that can help us to quiet our mind and tune us into our breath and body (ie, yoga or prayer and meditation) we become more sensitive to the things that make us feel good and, conversely, the things that make us feel not so good. When we become better at being more ‘in tune’ with our internal GPS then we can make the smaller and daily inspired actions that move us toward happiness little by little; thereby avoiding those build up of catastrophic emotional events that almost erupt us into taking action to find relief.
This week I invite you to ask yourself, “In what areas of my life have I been allowing discord, unrest, and unhappiness? How have I chosen to reside in the zone of my comfort instead of taking a step (even if it’s a little scary to venture into the new and unknown) towards my happiness; towards my bliss?”
I also encourage you to set aside some time each day this week to get quite, focus on the breath, and see what route your internal GPS encourages you to take to arrive you at your desired destination of happiness.
