CLEWISTON — The Jahna Sand Mine public hearing that was to take place at the meeting of the Hendry County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday, May 12, was postponed to Monday, Sept. 14 in Clewiston. Any members of the public wishing to speak on the sand mine topic will be sworn in and heard at that time.
The purpose of the hearing is to address the request to rezone the properties to authorize a sand mine with a commercial/industrial lease area on approximately 1,330 acres straddling both sides of Sam Jones Trail (CR833). The eastern portion of the sand mine is located north of and adjacent to Pine Cone Avenue, which borders Montura Ranch Estates to the South.
Mining operations will occur on the east and west sides of CR 833, encompassing approximately 828 acres of the total 1,330-acre Planned Unit Development. Phase I of the mining operation will be on the east side of CR 833, progressing in increments of approximately 50 acres.
