Curfew tomorrow for Eastern Hendry

Posted

The Hendry County Sheriff’s Office posted a video on their Facebook page on June 2, 2020 at 3:00 p.m. The video featured Sheriff Steve Whidden, where he cautioned everyone that he had received information about a possible Black Lives Matter protest being panned for Wednesday, June 3, 2020 at the Walmart in Clewiston.

In the video, Sheriff Whidden said, “we have reached out to multiple agencies, who are going to be on standby, to work with us in case anything kicks off. We’re not expecting anything, however if you’ve watched the news you’ve seen what happens at some of these protests after hours. Due to this, tomorrow night in Eastern Hendry County, I’m going to implement a curfew from 8 o’clock to 5 a.m.”

Whidden explained he was not trying to cause any unnecessary alarm, but that it was important to get an important message out there.

“If you come into Hendry County to protest, that’s fine. Do it peacefully. The minute you start your criminal activity, the looting, breaking windows, anything- you’re going to be met with a strong hand, and it will be dealt with swiftly,” Sheriff Whidden warned.

The HCSO’s Facebook post read, “Please watch and share regarding a potential Black Lives Matter protest tomorrow night at the Clewiston Walmart at 6:00 pm. Also, due to the numerous other protest that have occurred across the country, and the potential for anarchy to follow after dark, I will be implementing a curfew for Eastern Hendry County from 8:00 pm to 5:00 am on Wednesday, June 3rd.”
