HC Traffic Safety meeting Sept. 6

Posted

For the month of August there have been no fatalities due to crashes in Hendry County. The total amount of fatal crashes went up compared to last year but the total amount of crashes and injured went down compared to 2017. The “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign was successful. The Hendry County Police pulled in nine DUI arrests, they arrested 169 arrests total, 85 with warrants and 27 of them were felony arrests. They issued 90 citations and recovered one stolen vehicle.

The safe routes to school are scheduled in five of the six elementary schools compared to one in 2017. Forrey Drive will be closed for construction the 21 of September until after Thanksgiving. Francisco Street in Clewiston will also be closed for construction from the beginning of November. The crosswalk on Bridge Street will be repainted, it will not be moved because it is right in front of the entrance of the court house, they are scared people will just jaywalk if they move the crosswalk further south.

There was a request for a left turn signal coming from south Bridge Street onto 80. Right now there is no left turn arrow. There is a left turn lane but no signal, which causes traffic to back up. There is also a problem with the Fort Denaud Bridge weight limit. Apparently at night a lot of delivery trucks that are too heavy drive over the bridge without knowing they are not allowed to. The next traffic safety meeting is on October 4.
