Planned Parenthood launches syphilis care, offers rapid testing throughout Florida

Posted

FLORIDA — This month, Planned Parenthood of Florida continued to build on their promise of a “Bigger. Better. Bolder.” future for health care through their launch of syphilis treatment at health centers throughout the state.

Syphilis is one of the fastest-rising STIs in Florida and can result in serious permanent damage if untreated, such as brain damage, paralysis, and blindness.

Available statistics underscore the importance of expanding this service:

Six of Florida’s 10 most populous counties (Miami-Dade, Broward, Hillsborough, Orange, Duval, Pinellas, and Brevard) have syphilis rates above the state average, according to the most recent data available (FL Health Charts).

Over 20% of Florida counties have experienced increasing rates of congenital syphilis (passed from the pregnant individual to fetus), including three of its most populous counties (Duval, Palm Beach, and Pinellas) according to the most recent data available. (FL Health Charts)

Nationwide, total syphilis cases rose by over 40%, while congenital syphilis increased by over 80% between 2020-2024. (CDC)

A syphilis test can return results in as little as 20 minutes for patients who opt for a rapid test, but patients may require additional testing if medically indicated.

Patients can access STI/STD testing and treatment at 15 PPFL health centers, with rapid STI tests available at the following locations:

Tallahassee

Jacksonville
Gainesville
Treasure Coast
Florida Mango (West Palm Beach)
Pembroke Pines
Golden Glades (Miami)
Kendall

In addition to expanding STI and STD testing and treatment, PPFL has expanded preventative measures. Patients who were assigned male at birth can receive post-exposure care to reduce the chance of communicating bacterial STIs, such as syphilis, gonorrhea, or chlamydia, using DoxyPep (Doxycycline Post-Exposure Prophylaxis).

This expansion follows a trend of growth from the affiliate. In recent months, PPFL has expanded access to numerous services such as behavioral and mental health, infertility, prenatal, and abortion care.

Statement from Alexandra Mandado, President & CEO of Planned Parenthood of Florida:
“At Planned Parenthood of Florida, we believe health care should meet the moment—and right now, that moment demands we be bigger, better, and bolder. With STI rates rising and health care access shrinking, launching syphilis care is just one more way we’re stepping up to meet our patients’ needs.

In the face of political hostility and government threats, we’re not backing down—we’re building up and working overtime to ensure that every person has access to the care they rely on. No matter what.”

Statement from Dr. Robyn Schickler, Chief Medical Officer of Planned Parenthood of Florida:
“We are deeply committed to ensuring health care access for all and, with STI rates on the rise and ongoing attacks on our public health infrastructure, access to sexual health care is more critical than ever. That’s why we’re investing in solutions that meet people where they are—with compassion and urgency.

Since our merger, Planned Parenthood of Florida has expanded services and extended hours at multiple health centers, including weekend availability, so patients no longer have to choose between going to work and receiving lifesaving care.

With this new offering—alongside our many other recent steps to expand access—we’re doubling down on our mission to provide high-quality, comprehensive care to every patient who walks through our doors.”
