New baseball program open to children ages 8 to 15

OKEECHOBEE – A new baseball program is coming to Okeechobee County.

At their June 19 meeting, Okeechobee County Commissioners waived the fees for use of county sports fields for June 28 through Aug. 2 for the Shermon Gordon Elite Athletic Group.

“Our goal is to give the kids something to do,” said Gordon. “We don’t have a movie theater. We don’t have a bowling alley. We don’t have anything.”

He said the travel baseball program will be open to children ages 8 to 15.

“We have a lot of kids who play travel ball, but they go to Port St. Lucie to play,” he continued.

Commissioner Frank DeCarlo said the Children’s Services Council has reviewed the plan and has “blessed it.”

Gordon said his organization has 501c nonprofit status.

He said they plan to use the ball field next to Kiwanis Park. Practices are scheduled every Friday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The first sign ups will be Friday, June 21 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Kiwanis Park.  Bring your child's birth certificate. For more information see the Elite Athletic Group page on Facebook.
