Rodeo to benefit injured cowboy

Posted

OKEECHOBEE -- Friends of rodeo cowboy Casey Sherman will host a benefit rodeo on June 8.

Sherman was injured while competing in the wild horse race at the Chalo Nitka rodeo in Moore Haven in March. He suffered a tibia and fibula compound fracture which required surgery, according to information shared by event organizers. Sherman has been out of work since the accident. Proceeds from the rodeo will help with medical bills and help Sherman support his family.

The June 8 benefit will be held at the Okeechobee Cattlemen’s Rodeo Arena on US 441 N.

The Youth Cowboy Challenge will start at 10 a.m. (signups at 9 a.m.) Cost is $200 per four-person team. The youth teams will pen three steers, then tie one down and team rope one steer (one cowboy ropes the steer’s head and one ropes the steer’s heel).

Goat tying will follow the Youth Challenge. In a goat tying event, young riders gallop their horses up to a tethered goat, jump off the horse and tie three of the goat’s legs together.

A live auction will start at 1:30 p.m. There will also be a silent auction and a 50/50 raffle.

The Cowboy Challenge for those age 18 and older will start at 4 p.m. (3 p.m. signup). Cost is $400 per four-person team. The event will start with two team members doing a “buddy pickup” where one cowboy rides by and the buddy jumps on back of the horse and they ride to the end of the arena where another team member is holding the buddy’s horse. When the buddy is mounted, steers are released into the arena. The team must pen the steers, tie one down and tie one to a post. The entire event must be completed in less than 4 minutes.

To enter, teams must text team name and all four members names to Leann White at 863-634-7005.

BBQ Pulled Pork Dinners will be served, starting at 11 a.m. Presale tickets are $12. Dinners will also be sold the day of the rodeo for $15, until sold out.

If you would like to be a sponsor or donate an item for the live or silent auctions, please contact Jenna Stephens at 205-577-6528.
